Bordalás: " We have utmost respect for FC Barcelona, but we are Valencia CF"
Valencia CF coach José Bordalás talked to the media on Saturday, ahead of Sunday's LaLiga match against FC Barcelona
Is Sunday's game a three-point game for you, or does it mean something else?
I always want to win. When I don't win, I'm not happy. It's what I transmit to my players. You can say that I don’t know how to lose well. I take it badly. These are three very important points. The team are in good form, despite having gone several matchdays without winning. We go there with the utmost respect for FC Barcelona, but we are Valencia CF and we have an ambitious mentality.
You have never won at the Camp Nou. How many times have you dreamed of beating FC Barcelona?
There is always a first time. When you haven't won for a long time, you're obviously closer. I am not concerned about anything else. I worry about the moment and the moment is tomorrow's game. We are only thinking about playing well and winning the game. I am very realistic and I believe in work, not dreams. We all have dreams as humans, but it is work that gives you the ability to achieve important things.
What is the injury list looking like?
Thierry Correia has a problem that has been going on for a few weeks, and he is already feeling fairly good. Toni Lato has a small contracture and we will see if he can be available tomorrow. Koba Lein has a problem, but a very small one. The rest are all available. We will have Soler, Gayà and Cheryshev.
Is a limitation of minutes being considered for the injured players, or are they are at 100%?
They are 100% recovered and the way the game progresses will tell us if they are ready for 94 minutes. They have trained normally. They are excited and eager to help the team, and have the commitment they have always shown.
What is Correia’s injury?
It is an imbalance that he has. The coaching staff can give you more details. We are confident hat he will be back with the rest of his teammates soon. He is a player that we need, and who is in a great moment of his career.
In your meetings with Peter Lim, is there time to discuss team issues? Or are they courtesy meetings?
They are work meetings, obviously. Lim, as the majority shareholder of the club, is in the habit of talking to his employees, and it was a very good meeting. I ended up very satisfied. Day-to-day issues of the team and our work were discussed.
When you spoke to Lim, did you ask for players?
I have said it numerous times. I have not spoken with him many times, but on those occasions that I have spoken with him, he has seemed very cordial -someone with whom you can speak calmly. I got a very good impression from him. We talked about different topics, and we agreed to meet again later, but we are not thinking about signings now because we are focused on the season.
How do Barça change with Kun and Ansu Fati?
They are two magnificent players. We know Kun well. Ansu Fati gives them speed and danger. They also have Jordi Alba back. They are bringing back players who are important for Barça. They are an attacking team with fast players. They don't have Messi, but they do have magnificent players. Messi's departure can diminish them for a short period of time, as happened to Real Madrid with Cristiano Ronaldo.
What would you say to fans who doubt Maxi and Diakhaby's performance?
Players go through spells of greater or lesser performance or success. Players mature with time and with hard work. I am happy with both of them. I respect the fans who are not happy, but this is a new season. Maxi has great commitment and has shown it. It is true that we try to correct and improve the issue with the amount of goals that he scores, because he is a player who has to be close to the danger zone as a forward, and sometimes the extra work he does to help the team does not allow him to be in those positions. With Diakhaby I have seen a very noticeable improvement since I arrived. He has shown it in the few minutes that he has played. He has matured, he has grown and he is going to surprise us all.
