Baraja: "tHE TEAM kePT going AND COMPETED UNTIL THE END"
The Valencia CF coach talks after the 2-2 result against Deportivo Alavés
Valencia CF coach José Bordalás spoke in his pre-match press conference before the LaLiga Matchday 29 game against Elche CF.
Can you give us a rundown of the list?
I haven't decided on the squad list yet. I have to have a meeting to see what players are available. Gabriel Paulista has not trained today, but he has been feeling good. Jasper Cillessen and Thierry Correia have been back for a very short time and it is difficult for them to make the cut, since they have out for a long time.
Financial Fair Play has risen. Have the club told you if, despite this, you have to continue selling?
We haven't talked about that issue. We have not put the matter on the table because we are focused on the competition. There is a lot at stake and it is time to be focused on the day-to-day work that we have to do.
In terms of player management, is the final in Seville being taken into account?
It is being taken into account, even if it is very far away. An injury relapse right now limits you a lot, not only for the cup, but also for the rest of the LaLiga season.
Is Gabriel Paulista going to be like this until the end of the season?
Gabriel is doing pretty well. We are taking care of him and trying to have him available as soon as possible. Let's see if he is 100% fit and can be ready for tomorrow. We hope that it is not like it has been until the end of the season. He has had to play highly demanding games, but we hope that he will improve towards the end.
How do you get more attacking chances once defensive solidity has been achieved?
We have to find a balance and it is not easy. In Getafe we anticipated the game being like it was. Against Granada we won comprehensively. We have had a significant imbalance at a defensive level, although in recent games we have only conceded one goal. We have also had significant absences, especially on the wings. We have had to adapt and that is part of football.
Do you expect a game similar to that against Getafe, or more open?
Elche has been doing things really well. They have tightened up a lot at a defensive level and know how to defend very well, both in a low block and in a medium block. They have a lot of skill and experience. It's going to be a tough match. We have to give a good showing, compete at a good level and try to get the victory. Elche are a team that are in good form.
After the Getafe game, what would you say is Valencia's style?
You have given a very tight game and a high level of intensity as a reference. I know what the style of my team is.
We are in the final of the Copa del Rey and being in a final is not an easy task. In LaLiga, the team have had good moments and other less good ones. We would like to be much higher up in LaLiga, but we have to be realistic and go step by step.
We can't use last week as a reference. I am the first critic of that, because we have to create chances and find balance.
In reference to the style of Elche, do Francisco's tactics benefit or harm them?
There are not so many styles in football. The matches are very similar. There are games with more success in front of goal and they might be more fun. When FC Barcelona scored four goals against us, nobody focused on the style.
In today's football, there is dynamism, transitions, set pieces, solvency, reliability... I don't see as many styles as people talk about.
