Gattuso: “We always have to go all-out, right from the start”

Gennaro Gattuso gave a press conference before Valencia CF’s game against Celta Vigo, which takes place on Saturday at 6:30pm CEST.

Is Cavani ready to play? What do you expect from him?

He has trained well. I hope he scores. When he is fit, he is a player who has always scored goals. He has incredible experience and great heart. He likes to work with and without the ball.

How's Musah?

He has a little discomfort. It is not a big thing. He has not trained today. I have to talk to the doctor after the press conference because he has a small injury. I don't know if he will be able to play in the game, but he has not trained today.

Luis Enrique has called up Guillamón as a centre-back. Do you see him more as a central defender or a midfielder?

I see him as a pivot. I have seen him as a centre-back with the national team. For our way of playing, I think that with three at the back he can play as a centre back, but with a line of four I like him as a pivot.

The important thing is that he is called up for the national team. I am very happy for him and also for Gayà. It is important for us that our players play for their national teams.

Have you made a decision about Iago Herrerín?

There have been many things to do this week. It wasn’t good for people to talk about whether he is carrying a few extra kilos. He is a player who has a particular physique.

For now, he is going to continue training with us for another week and then we will decide.

Are you worried about how a Celta side headed by an Aspas in form coming into the game?

Celta are not just Aspas. They are a very dangerous team. They attack with many players. We have to have a great match.

If we play like we did against Rayo, we will lose. We are going to play an important game for us.  We have to win. When you win at home and then lose away, you always have the responsibility to win when you return home.

Will the two-week international break matter if you don't win tomorrow?

I like that the players from my team go away with their national teams, as it means that they are playing well. We don’t have any more players off, because Cavani is not going to travel. 

He has said that he will stay with us. Musah will not be going either if his small problem is confirmed.The normal thing would be for us to give them two days of rest after the game.They have played six games in a month and a half.

I don't like to overload my brain before the problem arises. Let's see how tomorrow's game goes. I have to think positive. We are going to prepare well for the match.

What have you said to the dressing room so that the lack of intensity does not repeat itself?

When a coach sees a match like we had against Rayo, he should worry. The first goal came from a transition without pressure. We cannot have that mentality. We always have to go all-out, from the first minute. There are no excuses. If we don't play at 110% we can lose against any team in LaLiga. We all have to push in the same direction.

I believe that the team must do other things in terms of football, besides intensity. The key is reading the match. I like to have the ball, create numerical superiority and move forward. It's not just pressure or attractive play. We have to look at this.

You explained that the signing of a goalkeeper was to avoidpromoting from the second team. Does that imply a lack of confidencein Cristian Rivero?

It has nothing to do with that. Iago isn’t coming as a second or third goalkeeper. Cristian has not played any games in LaLiga. In losing Jaume we have lost an experienced goalkeeper. We have looked for a goalkeeper who knows LaLiga, but this does not mean that he is second or third choice. You have to look at them in training.

How is the dressing room ahead of tomorrow's match?

The team always train very well. We are a young team, but I don't like it when the team are surprised. The whole team were surprised against Rayo Vallecano and I don't like this.

We work a lot on a tactical level and I don't like this to happen. I'm hearing everyone say that what happened at Vallecas can happen at other grounds.

There are many players who know this league and know that theyave to play 95 minutes at full strength. The team cannot be surprised. We have to be aware that in this league the team have to always be at our best. We can’t lack attitude.

Diakhaby’s contract is ending and he could arouse the interest of other teams.

I have a duty. When I talk about the players, I explain to the people who have the responsibility for them what I think. I write it on a piece of paper. Then my work ends.

Would you like to coach Valencia at the new stadium?

I hope that God gives me the opportunity to live many years, but anything can happen tomorrow. I really like working and coaching these players. I love the day-to-day work.

I arrive at eight in the morning here and I feel at home. Ireally like coaching the team. I want to be here for 1, 2, 3, 4 years. But infootball everything can change in a second. Us coaches live by our results.

Was the decision for Cavani not to go away with Uruguay your choice?

The player decided to stay here. It is something he has decided.

Are you worried that Cavani has been talked about more than Celta

during the week?

We have talked a lot about Celta. I understand that you have talked about Cavani, but the important thing is that we have talked about Celta.
