Maxi Gómez has a chance at a fairytale debut for Valencia CF this weekend, when his new club meet his former club on Matchday 2 of the LaLiga season.
As an unused substitute in the opening game of the season against Real Sociedad, the second match of the campaign against Celta Vigo could see him run out for the first time in an official fixture.
The striker will be returning to Balaídos, where he spent two seasons before his arrival in Valencia this summer.
"It's going to be a special game. I hope I'm able to get minutes," the Uruguayan told VCF Media in the days prior to the match.
"It's something very nice. I shared many things with Celta. My two seasons there were very good for me, and thanks to them I was able to come to Valencia CF."
Having already got off the mark in preseason, Gómez will have no hesitation in opening his official account against some of his ex-teammates.
"Number 9s live off their goals. I hope that we can go to Vigo and score. Scoring a goal there would be nice for me. I want to do my best for Valencia CF," he explained.
"I was able to do adapt well at Celta Vigo, and now I've come to another club, with another rhythm and another style of football. I'm gradually adapting, and I'm trying to do that as quickly as possible."
Watching the season opener from the bench, Gómez saw plenty to be positive about for this weekend.
"I think that the group did a fantastic job in the first game. We had a lot of chances on goal. Real Sociedad scored an equaliser in the final minute, and it was a little unfair because they didn't do much to deserve it. We're going to give everything in the game against Celta and aim for the win, because we need the three points. I hope we get them."
