Gracia: "The team never gave up on going for the win"
A good showing from Valencia CF saw the team pick up a point against Athletic Club, and coach Javi Gracia reflected on the 1-1 away draw in his post-match press conference.
Reviewing the game
"In the first half we had a disadvantage on the scoresheet, but the opponents hadn't even had a shot against us. We had not been overwhelmed at all. In the second half, we had more doubts to begin with, and as the game progressed we scored the goal from a set piece and we could have got a few more. The team never gave up on the win, and we never made changes to hold out for a draw. We went for the win and it just wasn't possible. I would like the team to compete with that ambition regardless of the result, knowing that the points at stake are hugely important and we have to do what we can to win them."
Keeping growing
"We continue to have a great need for points, and we will see what happens. What we aspire to be is more consistent, ambitious and intense in every game that remains."
Trust in the starting XI
"I used the same starting XI as last time for this game, but we will see about next time. Things always happen during the week that mean one player may not be available or another is better served to play. I'm not saying that I won't repeat this lineup, but neither will I confirm that I will do it. I think those who played today have given us 4 points out of 6, and if we had been more clinical in front of goal we would have achieved a better result."
An unfair halftime scoreline
"In the first half, we obviously came out to win. That attitude could be seen on the pitch. The opposition didn't have a shot on goal. With more shots than the opposition and with more presence than them, I think we were hard done-by to trail at halftime. We could have done better, but the team didn't come out badly."
Cutrone's debut
"In the time that he was on the pitch, he participated in the defensive work that the team needed. In attack he was very active on some transitions, especially the one that he opened up for Maxi. He was very motivated, and worked hard, like the rest of the team."
Tactical variants
"I am always open to choosing the best way to play, and if I have to change the formation then I would do it. However, I am more about choosing the players who are in the best form, and seeking balance within the team. The most used formation is 4-4-2, and the new arrivals can play in that setup and in any other."
