Guedes' prolific month continues with Villarreal brace
Striking twice for Valencia CF in their Europa League derby against Villarreal, Gonçalo Guedes helped his team to take away an advantage for the second leg at Mestalla. The goals were not the first for the Portuguese in the competition: He had previously got onto the scoresheet against FC Krasnodar in the last round.
Guedes occupied two positions in the game, as he was first played on the left of the attack and then -following Denis Cheryshev’s introduction in place of Kevin Gameiro on 68 minutes- moved up to occupy a spot as a striker alongside Rodrigo.
The first goal was a display of quick reactions, as he put in the rebound from a Dani Parejo penalty saved by Villarreal goalkeeper Andrés Fernández. The second was an injury time counterattack, and a cross expertly delivered into the box by Cheryshev for Guedes to score.
The versatile attacker has five goals to his name thus far in 2018/19, and all have come in the past month: Against Girona FC, FC Krasnodar, Real Madrid and Villarreal CF.
