Guillamón: "I'm sure that I've learnt a lot this season"

The defender talks to VCF Media as he heads off to Slovenia with the Spain Under-21s

The season is not over yet for Hugo Guillamón. Upon the conclusion of the LaLiga campaign with Valencia CF, he faces a new challenge in the form of the Under-21s European Championships.

The VCF Academy graduate joins up with the Spain team coached by Luis de la Fuente with the target of going all the way. Before their quarter final fixture against Croatia, Guillamón assesses his season at club level and talks about the international tournament.

The LaLiga season

"It's been a very difficult season for everybody. We got to a situation in which we were struggling until the final games.

"I think that this season will help us to improve on what we've done badly. We have to learn from our mistakes and improve, so that next season is a good one for Valencia CF."

On a personal level

"After debuting last season and playing several games, this year was important for me because of what it meant. It was my first year in LaLiga, and I only wish it had gone better in terms of results. I'm sure that I've learnt a lot, and that next season I will do better.

"When you make your debut, everything seems easy. But when you're in the group it's difficult to do it on a weekly basis. I'm happy to have completed my first year in LaLiga, and I hope that there are many more to come."

The return of fans to Mestalla

"I had that unfinished business of not having been able to play in front of the fans at Mestalla. I was waiting for it with a lot of excitement and it was a very nice moment.

"Gradually things will get back to normal -in football and in everybody's personal lives. I'm happy that the fans will slowly be able to return to the stadium."

International duty

"In March we qualified from the Group Stage, making it into the quarter finals. That was our objective. The less holiday time I have, the better.

"At the end of the day, the best teams in Europe will be there. Spain are always candidates to win, but there are some other very strong teams with players who are proven at the top level -such as Thierry Correia. It will be good if we play against Portugal, but against any team there will be some very competitive duels. May the best side win."
