Mestalla brimming with emotions running high
Relive the emotional events that took place in the run-up to Valencia CF-Real Betis to pay tribute to the victims and those affected by the tragic flash floods
Valencia CF welcomed Athletic Club on the 1st of July at 10 pm kick-off time (CET) at Mestalla on matchday 33 of LaLiga Santander the first match under Voro in his sixth stint in the Valencia CF dugout as caretaker head coach.
Valencia CF had a slow start to the game with Athletic Club having the first chance in the opening minute but it went just off target. Minutes later, Parejo won the ball back and sent it into Gonçalo Guedes who forced Unai Simón into a diving save.
However, over the ten minute mark, Raúl García made it 0-1 to Athletic Club. Valencia CF tried to get back into the game but without making any inroads both on and off the ball as the visitors were comfortably dominating in possession.
Valencia CF came mighty close to getting back on level terms in the closing minutes through a Maxi Gómez diving header who got on the end of a teasing Alessandro Florenzi cross from the right wing but he could not quite guide it goalwards.
Valencia CF grew into the game in the closing minutes as minutes later, Alessandro Florenzi had a follow-up shot blocked by the Athletic Club defence. Valencia CF trailed by 0-1 to Athletic Club at the Intermission.
The same script followed in the second half and just minutes into the second half, Raúl García made it 0-2 to Athletic Club a minute inside the second half as the hosts dominance continued as Valencia CF were going through a stagnant passage of play.
Carlos Soler and Denis Cheryshev came on for Gonçalo Guedes and Ferran Torres a double substitution over the hour mark in the game.
Maxi Gomez and Rodrigo Moreno got on the end of two dangerous crosses but both chances went begging as Valencia CF upped the tempo and providing a lot in the way of danger and then Rodrigo Moreno had a forceful attempt which went wide with little under twenty minutes to go.
Despite trying, there was no way back for Valencia CF and the match finished 0-2 to Athletic Club as home unbeaten record came to an end against Athletic Club. Valencia CF will visit Granada CF on Saturday at 10 pm kick-off time at the Nuevo Los Carmenes.
