Vlaovic: "It's always enormously satisfying when you score against Real Madrid"

The former VCF player recalls a fantastic game against Real Madrid from 1999

Goran Vlaovic was the guest this Tuesday on VCF Media Radio, on the 21st anniversary of Valencia CF’s 6-0 win against Real Madrid 6-0 in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals. Talking via video connection, Vlaovic said that:

“It was an unforgettable night for me, and those memories aren't something that goes away easily. I remember that it was as if each time we got close to the Real Madrid goal, we scored. I'm happy that I was there, and that I was able to score. It was a wonderful night for our team, and it's always enormously satisfying when you score against Real Madrid.”

The Croatian also recalled that it wasn’t the only great showing during his spell at the club.

“As a team we had several good games at that time, but that was definitely one of the best. I don't know if people remember, but the return leg in Madrid was also very hard. Real Madrid were not just any team. That 6-0 scoreline was a result of our great play, and not because we had a weak team in front of us.”

“I was very excited when I scored. Then I received a red card which made me sad, because I wouldn’t be able to play in the second leg. I remember that the atmosphere at Mestalla was wonderful.”

Valencia CF went on to win the Copa del Rey, and Vlaovic believes that it was well-deserved.

“It was completely on merit. We beat great teams (Levante, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid). That means that we truly deserved the cup. It was a first trophy in many years, and that was shown in the celebration and the reaction from the fans. It was a very meaningful period of my life.”
