Luis Rioja: “We have to go to Vallecas to win and take another step towards our goal”
The Valencia CF attacker spoke to the media in a press conference at the Ciutat Esportiva de Paterna
Ferran Torres and Hugo Guillamón are the latest Valencia CF players to represent Spain, as they are set to take part in the Under-19s European Championships in Armenia this summer. The VCF pair are currently training at the national team's Las Rozas facility, and will travel to Yerevan to kick off their campaign against the competition's hosts on July 14th.
"It's going to be a very nice experience. It's the European Championships and you're competing against the best in the continent," Torres told VCF MEDIA this week. "We're in the 'Group of Death' with Armenia, Italy and Portugal. We have to be ourselves and show why our objective is to reach the final and win. If we say it, then it's because we can do it. We have the squad to compete against anyone. We've shown that at Under-17 level and now we want more."
Guillamón added that "Our time in the Under-17s is behind us, and now another challenge awaits us. Nobody is going to gift us anything, just because we were European Champions or World Cup finalists."
"In that final we were very tired and couldn't compete well. We have to all stick together as a team and help each other, as that way I'm sure that we will go far. We can do something good."
Torres played a part in Valencia CF winning the Copa del Rey, including scoring against Sporting Gijon. He will attempt to end his season with another trophy -as teammates Gonçalo Guedes and Carlos Soler have already done with their respective national teams.
"A player always works towards winning trophies. I'm going to do everything that I can to win another one -in this case, the Under-19s European Championships. It isn't every year that you get the chance to win two trophies, and we're going to try."
