Voro: "We have to focus everything on the game against Espanyol"
Valencia CF caretaker coach Voro González talked with journalists on Wednesday, the day before his side take on RCD Espanyol at Mestalla on LaLiga Matchday 37.
RCD Espanyol
"We're playing against Espanyol, and despite them having already been relegated it is not going to be an easy game. Those players are going to want to perform well ahead of next season. Espanyol competed very well against Real Sociedad and against Real Madrid. We know how difficult it is going to be. We have a game tomorrow and another on Sunday. We will try to pick the best players to compete in both games, taking rest into account. We are going to try to ensure that the team are fresh, and young players will feature, but there are no problems in this group and everybody wants to play."
The mentality for Matchday 37
"The only thing that exists is tomorrow's game. If we win tomorrow, then we can look around and see if we have a mathematical possibility or not if we beat Sevilla. Even though the games on Thursday and Sunday are very close together, we have to focus everything on tomorrow -because if we don't win tomorrow then it doesn't matter about the game in Seville.
"We have to compete in these games like the professionals that we are. That gives us the biggest chance of winning: Playing like professionals and for our dignity. Tomorrow's game will decide whether we can go to Seville, get the three points and achieve our objective. If we don't win tomorrow, then it's all over. The game is tomorrow, and we are focusing everything on that."
The dressing room
"The dressing room -bearing in mind that we are coming into the final two games with little chance of qualifying for Europe- is OK. Obviously I've been through different situations of this type at the end of the season, and this is one of the best, because there is a dressing room that, whilst hurt and disappointed, take responsibility for the objectives. We have no problems and the team are working in an acceptable way. We have a slim chance of qualifying for Europe. The game against CD Leganés was a hammer blow, because we were very close and the circumstances didn't work out for us that day.”
His feelings about the situation
"I'm annoyed, just like everybody: The fans and the players. I said on Day 1 that it was a responsibility for me, and I can guarantee that I suffer as much as anybody. We are going to fight to the end. It's become very difficult for us to get into Europe. The club had asked me to be caretaker coach and I accepted, to do the best that I could -with my mistakes and successes."
Mistakes made
"I do not have a magic wand. Football is down to footballers, like I have always said. The club makes this decision and we try to handle it it. I have always been positive, having seen the good team we have, and was very optimistic. Every team plays their game and we are in a negative dynamic; it's not a case of Voro appearing with a magic wand and us winning. The team have been in games. The team are responsible and professional, but it is not easy. There is no magic wand.
"In Granada, the positioning of the wall for the free kick is a small detail, but that meant that we dropped two more points that would have given us a lot. We did not have that little bit of luck that a team always needs at Leganés, where we did not deserve to lose. It is not an excuse. We are going to fight to the end and we are going to think about the first match of the two, trying to win tomorrow. We have always said that, with our experience from other occasions, we were going to try to manage this in the best way, looking for solutions with absolute humility and with the responsibility of what it means for the club and the fans."
